I sat patiently for quite a while waiting for one of the butterflies in my parents garden to land in front of me - and was rewarded with two at the same time.
"Happiness is like a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you."
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Taken on the beach at Nice. The humidity in the evening had made the pebbles wet and highlighted their various colours - not normally seen during the day when they appear mostly grey. Can you spot my mobile phone?
"Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find that you have crossed the mountain."
Marilyn French
This is one of my favourite photographs. I love the colours, the shadows and the lighting. Taken at Morjim beach in Goa, India it looks like a windsurfer but in fact it is a kite that was just about to be launched - you can just make out the guy controlling it in the water, just above the woman and child heading towards the water.
"Imagination is the highest kite one can fly."
Lauren Bacall

Sparks flew through a sky of shimmering white
as we swam though a blood red sea
towards the blackness.
Crazy, crazy; crazy!
But who?
Storms approach from the distance and
chaos looms;
but who has the strength to face them?

Another beautiful bay in Sydney. Little Bay is very small but awe inspiring. The girl in the photo seemed transfixed with the view.
"Here, in the little bay,
Full of tumultuous life and great repose,
Where twice a day,
The purposeless, glad ocean comes and goes"
Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore"
Another very simple yet striking picture. Taken near Cap d'Ail on the Cote d'Azur. The light here is always amazing.
"Of all the wonders of nature, a tree in summer is perhaps the most remarkable; with the possible exception of a moose singing 'Embraceable You' in spats."
Woody Allen
I adored the feeling of space here. The clouds going right back to the distant hills, the wide sandy beach and the long waves rolling in. I also liked the contrast of the beautiful beach and the industrial buildings behind it. It's only when see how small the people on the beach are, you appreciate the sheer size of the beach.
"The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach - waiting for a gift from the sea"
Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Taken from one of my favourite beaches at Lady Bay in Sydney I love the atmosphere in this photograph.
"A photographer must be prepared to catch and hold on to those elements which give distinction to the subject or lend it atmosphere"
Bill Brandt
Another one from Miami beach. I love the drama in this one, with the heavy clouds, the waves and the rainbow. There are so many shades and textures
"The true harvest of my life is intangible - a little stardust caught, a portion of the rainbow I have clutched"
Henry David Thoreau
Taken off the coast of Cuba, I love the colours in this one. The clouds drifted in front of the sun at the last moment which I think gives a nice connection with those towards the top right of the picture.
"Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky."
Rabindranath Tagore
This was taken in Miami - a pretty basic shot but I like it because of it's simplicity. It wasn't set up by me - there were just two chairs in the middle of an empty beach.
"To myself I am only a child playing on the beach, while vast oceans of truth lie undiscovered before me"
Isaac Newton
